INTRODUCTION
The intention of this page is to share a different SA Armour custom or tradition on a monthly base. So make sure you visit our site every month.
This web page content has been compiled as a guide to members of the South African Armoured Corps (SAAC) to ensure that the customs and traditions of the SAAC are known and used correctly. It is not intended to be absolutely complete, for no book on customs and traditions can ever be complete. The compilers would like to invite all members of the corps to contribute towards the improvement of this publication and continuously add forgotten, not so familiar and even new customs and traditions used by our regiments.
The Collins English Dictionary gives the following definitions:
- Tradition. The handing down from generation to generation of the same customs, beliefs, etc., especially by word of mouth. 2. The body of customs, thought, practices, etc., belonging to a particular country, people, family, or institution over a relatively long period. 3. A specific custom or practice of long standing.
- Custom. A usual or habitual practice; typical mode of behaviour. 2. The long-established habits or traditions of a society collectively; convention. 3. A practice which by long-established usage has come to have the force of law.
The compilers wish to thank the warrant officers of the School of Armour for the research and information that they supplied and Lt Col Hobo Hobson of the Natal Mounted Rifles for the information on the traditions of Stables and the Spurs.
The South African Armoured Corps is indebted to the following individuals that played a major role in the development of this information:
· WO 1 Grassy Green.
· WO 1 Blackie Swart.
· WO 1 Abé Crous.
· WO 1 Dennis Green.
· Ms Marietjie van Eden.
There were also many officers, WOs and NCOs that contributed to this second edition. The South African Armoured Corps appreciates their effort and salutes them.
